FTA Drug Test and Alcohol Testing

The Federal Transit Authority’s purpose is to ensure safety in public transportation.

Employees of public transportation vehicles are required to participate in a DOT mandated FTA drug and alcohol testing program.

 

These include employees of companies who:​

  • Operate a non-revenue service vehicle, when required to be operated by a holder of a Commercial Driver’s License

  • Maintain (including repairs, overhaul and rebuilding) a revenue service vehicle or equipment used in revenue service

Every employer has the responsibility to provide a safe and healthy workplace for all of its employees. Employers are responsible to comply with the 49CFR Part 40 and 49 CFR Part 655 of the DOT Regulations for company mandated FTA drug and alcohol testing programs.

 

The FTA program requires the following types of testing for Drug and Breath Alcohol:

Each Test screens for the following drugs:

  • Marijuana

  • Opiates

  • Cocaine

  • Amphetamines (Including MDMA & Ecstasy)

  • PCP

  • Operate a revenue service vehicle, including when not in revenue service

  • Control dispatch or movement of a revenue service vehicle

  • Pre-employment Testing – required prior to employment--- Optional for Breath Alcohol

  • Random Testing

  • Post-Accident Testing

  • Reasonable Suspicion Testing

  • Return-To-Duty Testing

  • Follow-up Testing

All DOT/FTA Drug tests are screened at a SAMHSA approved laboratory.
